on 2015-09-25 Great pen when it works.
For my work I am often in a warehouse reviewing CAD plans and I was inconvenienced by needing to carry a black or blue ink pen to sign documents, a red pen to redline drawings, and a pencil for general layout drawing and note taking. I was looking for something that was more adult than Bic 4-Color Grip Retractable Multi Ballpoint Pen, Blue Barrel, Assorted Ink, Each
and wrote smoothly. After too much research I settled on the rOtring.
Initially I was so happy with this product that I decided to buy more and give them out to loyal customers. I found them to write very well, feel good in the hand, and the way the bit (black, red, or pencil) is chosen is so mysterious that I often hand the pen to people and ask them to try to figure out how to make it write in red.
Unfortunately, I was not as pleased with the second batch that I bought. I know they came from Asia and I suspect they might be knockoffs. Although they still write well and look and feel the same, I can't get the second batch to consistently bring out the bit that I want. I also have a problem with the pencil bit head coming loose in the pen housing and jamming things up. On one pen, the pencil lead just pours out when I try to advance it instead of advancing as it should. It also is very difficult to add lead once you run out.
Though the pen that works is still the pen I reach for, with the price I paid and the inconsistency in quality I do not like these enough to recommend them.

Super convenient, not super durable
It's really convenient and has a good feel. Not for rugged use, though.
Need multiple pens and a pencil for my job. This is highly convenient. Didn't last forever, but it's cheap enough to replace.
This will go wrong:
-Pencil head will unscrew, you'll have to open up the pen and screw it back in. It's quite small. Little bit of lock-tight will fix that
-Will start to crack where head screws onto shaft. Used a small tab of duct tape around it and it held together
-Eraser cover will launch off occasionally. No good for aircraft maintenance.
-Tiny eraser will run out fast
-Someone will steal your awesome pen then not use it when they realize how much trouble it is to keep it working
All in all, I still enjoyed it, but wish it was durable enough for me. More of an "indoors" pen.

Exactly as described. Fast shipping. Hard to figure out at first but this combo is fantastic.

Great pen but I question the build quality of the release button.
At first I was smitten with the purchase. I Was looking for a "go to" daily pen. No longer did I have to carry multiple colored pens.Mechanically it functioned as expected with no problem selecting the pen color or pencil. Worked great!. However the release button near the clip tore I suspect that it didn't happen overnight. Gradually the pen would release on its on when pressure was applied during normal use. Disappointed since many reviews were high for Rotring products.

Husband works with blueprints and fire alarm installations on a daily basis. He LOVES this pen combo. He says not only does it write nicely, but it's all in one, which is perfect for what he does! He is fascinated by the design and functionality. Great product!

Mechanism is nice. My dad had one of the old Rotring ...
Does what's expected. I used to carry a blue pen, red pen, and mechanical pencil all day at work. Now, 1 pen.
Mechanism is nice. My dad had one of the old Rotring 4-in-1 pens, this is nicer looking than that.
Oh, didn't read it anywhere, but it takes a standard Pentel eraser in the back, which is convenient.
Only thing I wish you could get is blue instead of black.
Well, I'll just have to replace the cartridge.

Good pen. Needs blue ink also.
Would have been 5 stars if it had a blue pen also. I love that it has good grips on the barrel for holding the pen while writing. The release actuator is covered w/ rubber near the top of the pen. I'm not too fond of it because I feel over time the rubber will wear out, but it works. The actuator to click the pen in place isn't actually as short as it is in the picture. It's really 1/2" tall when not engaged, so it sticks up fairly high, but not unusual for most multi-function pens. The barrel is wider than say the 5-in-1 multi-function pen. Overall, I am pleased w/ the pen.

This is an awesome pen. It looks great and functions well. Switching between the red, black and lead is easy and unique. If you are a teacher this would be a must have item. I am a retired mathematics teacher and I still do some tutoring on the side occasionally. This pen goes with me to each session. I can use the pencil in the conventional manner and then highlight and/or emphasis steps with the remaining two colors.
They also make a black version. I am going to get it also, not because I need it, but just because it also looks great.

Not what I thought...
This pen is not on par with previous/other rOtring products. In fact, it is well over priced. I went ahead and purchased one because in the past I have been happy with their products except for the ink flow. Well, they corrected the ink flow issue, but appear to have compromised quality and feel of the pen for that correction. A good comparison may be that it feels like a Nissan pickup...dependable, but looks and feels cheap...and overpriced. I would not recommend paying $17 for this pen. You can purchase a cheap Bic and get about the same results...//Chuck

Perfect Multi-Function Pen/Pencil!
Perfect little multifunction pen - it's exactly what I was looking for. rOtring offers really great pens, this one is at a nice entry-level price point and it's perfect. The ballpoint pen ink is nice, the pencil lead is just the right amount of darkness without any of the smudgy pencil lead that some pencils use.
