Why didn't I install this sooner? Good price on a very helpful product, highly recommended!
I am glad I came across this product to hang my ladder in my garage. I have a 20 foot extension ladder, and my garage is quite small and already packed with a lot of stuff. I could not see leaving my brand new fiberglass ladder outdoors or leaving it on the floor of the garage. As a temporary solution, I used some chain I had left over to hang it from a ceiling bracket on my Saferacks installation, but it was such a hassle to put up and take down. On this last time that I removed it to get something off the Saferacks, I decided it was finally time to install this Racor Ladder Lift which I probably purchased close to 6 months ago. It took maybe 20-25 minutes to install (the time delay was finding the rafters). Once done it all installed so easily and worked perfectly. My only issue is the big pile of rope I have hanging on the wall. I know, because of the huge mechanical advantage -- my 9 year old daughter was able to hoist the ladder up -- that there isn't really a way around all that rope hanging on the wall. Still beats the chain I was using to hook the ladder up on my Saferacks install. For the price, I highly recommend this!
Photos attached are not that great because of the bad lighting in my garage.

Very happy with this solution, plus some installation notes & photos that might help you
Despite a few nits, I'm delighted with the Racor ladder lift. I have a 28ft extension ladder (14ft when collapsed). In my situation, I wanted to store my ladder parallel to open ceiling joists (no ceiling), so I'm posting pictures of my final installation.
One thing to note is that the ladder hangs lower than you might think, so I took steps to minimize that since I had the freedom to mount both the rope & pulley block and the hook higher than "ceiling height" (that is, the bottom of the rafter joists). See images for reference. In addition, I found that the ladder hangs lower under the rope & pulley unit than it does in the hook, so I also adjusted for that to ensure that the ladder hangs closer to level.
For the hook, I toe-nailed a 2×4 level with the bottom of the joists, flat side facing down/up (see photo). Since the hook goes up and over the member it hangs from (screws pointing down), this means that the hook top was 1¾in above the bottom of the joists.
The rope & pulley block was mounted pretty oddly, since it wants to be inline with the stud it's mounted on. As you can see in the photos, I used a 2×6 to straddle two joists by laying on top of them. Ideally this would have been a 2×10 or perhaps two 2×4's, but I used what I had. Because there are two screws on each end of the unit, I laid a 2×4 atop and across the 2×6 and used extra-long screws to finish. There are certainly cleaner ways to do this, but it's not noticeable and is plenty sturdy. The primary reason I'm sharing this is so that you will understand the final measurements this sort of mounting will give you.
At the end of the day, this type of mount will give you a rope & pulley unit mounted 4in above joist bottom, and a hook mounted 2in above joist bottom. My ladder is about 6in thick, so the bottom of the ladder hangs about 12in below joist bottom at the hook, and 13in below joist bottom at the rope & pulley.
One final note is that I see a lot of these units mounted with ends equidistant from the walls, so the pulley rope hangs down and often with no great place to mount the wall cleat to tie up the slack. As you can see, I mounted mine so the rope & pulley end of the ladder swings up to about 6-8in from the wall. This is just enough distance that I can easily draw out the rope to lock/unlock the pulley, but is still close enough that I can then easily tie up to a cleat on the wall and hang the slack. It works quite well.
Overall, I'm very happy with this simple, inexpensive solution to what used to be an unwieldy storage problem.

great space saver for my garage
I bought a huge extension ladder to make it easier to put up holiday lights. Since the lights have come down, I've dealt with my ladder laying on the garage floor taking up way too much room. I think the ladder will only get used a few times a year, so I really wanted a way to put the ladder out of the way.
The installation went very smooth and the multiple pulleys made winching up the ladder very easy. I'm super happy with the result.

Works well for 8' Step Ladder
The product description and the reviews I read didn't really mention step ladders specifically, but looking at the pictures and description I figured it should work with my 8' fiberglass step ladder. It works perfectly! It's a great way to use the dead space above the garage door. Because it is not mounted near a wall, I mounted the cleat to the side of a large rack using toggle bolts, so I didn't have to figure a way to route the rope to a wall.
The one suggestion I would make is to mount a 2 x 4 between two joists, if needed so that the pulley component is directly over the ladder rung it is attached to. The instructions say if there is not a joist directly above the rung you will attach too, then use the next joist out. For me the next joist was about a foot further out. Once the ladder is fully lifted, this causes the lift to pull at an angle rather than straight up. This means the bracket at the other end has a horizontal force applied to it (in addition to the expected vertical force). When I get the time, I intend to take it down and add the 2x4.

A "must have" for storing your investment
Let's just say that a ladder is an invaluable tool and sound investment for a homeowner. Unfortunately, they're seldom used and often get in the way. I have a 28 foot Fiberglass Type IA Werner extension ladder that I had laying on top of a project car for months.
I finally needed to find a permanent home for the ladder since I had some extensive engine work to perform on my wife's Mini Cooper and the Jeep had to be moved from the garage and the Mini to take it's spot. I had eyes this for months but put it off because I thought I could weld up a bracket and make my own ceiling hangers. Needless to say, time is worth money and I didn't want to spend any unnecessary time building something that already existed and was reasonably priced.
Once received, I opened the box and had it installed and ladder mounted in 20 minutes. I could easily do this install again in less than half the time if needed. The hardware was perfect and the instructions were straight forward. The pulley system is nice and the rope is long enough for tall ceilings. My garage ceiling is 9 feet tall and the rope was too long so I cut it to avoid having excess. The locking pulley system is simple but functional. I don't foresee having any problems with this.
On closing, I would recommend this to anyone who wants to mount their extension ladders from the ceiling. All you need is a drill, basics drill bits, basic socket set for securing the lag bolts, philips head bit or screwdriver and some knowledge on where your ceiling joists are.

Awesome product, great customer service.
Instructions came only for french and spanish; I emailed Racor's (not 2DayDeliver's) customer service requesting English in pdf format and they provided it the very next day. Great service.
Like the product a lot. It has gotten my 20' extension ladder up off the garage floor, or garage wall, or off of the top of my 27-gal or 50-gal storage bins or shelves or wherever else my ladder has resided all these years. That big ole ladder is probably one of the most underused pieces of important homeowner equipment that was the bane of my storage yet I could not get rid off. This product keeps it nicely out of the way above the vehicles in what was previously unused ceiling space.
I like it so much that I did not subtract one star (I was going to give it only four, but its pluses outweigh its negatives) for the follwoing cons:
I think the bracket could have been more robust. It is quite robust as-is, true, but my relatively small (as far as extension ladders go) 20-footer caused visible sag in the J-bracket. I personally do not feel like the J-bracket would fail anytime soon, but I would have more loved it if there was no detectable sag in the J-bracket from the weight of the ladder at all.
The product touts a "locking" ability. The instructions state that if you pull the rope toward some off-angle that some kind of friction lock will engage. I found that to work only sporadically. Minor problem, but if someone relies upon that while they turn around for a moment to do something else...
Those are the only two gripes. Otherwise an excellent product and fine service.
The lowest point of the ladder is less than 1' below the ceiling, I didn't measure it precisely but I eyeball-estimate it hangs 8-10 inches. So plenty of room for the wrangler to fit under it. Here's a frame of reference: The J-hook is long enough that my Ryobi impact driver/drill had room to fit inside the "J" to attach the lag bolts to the joist.
Oh, that's another good thing about this product - the lag bolts for the J-hook are substantial enough.
Makes sure you screw into joists. All bets are off if you try to anchor into drywall.

Perfect Solution for storing my extension ladder
I selected this solution to get my 22' extension ladder off of the wall and 'up out of the way'. I couldn't be happier. There is a large J shaped hook with provisions to be mounted either in line with a ceiling joist or across it, in my case it was across. The pulley arrangement has similar mounting options. I had a dead spot in my garage ceiling created by a bulkhead for upstairs HVAC, it became the perfect storage pocket. The unit installed easily and the supplied mounting hardware was adequate although I replaced the supplied screws with slightly longer ones to accommodate the double layer of drywall in my garage ceiling. The ladder is now stored out of sight and out of mind.

Genius lift that stores my heavy 28ft fiberglass ladder!
I bought a 28 foot extension ladder to work on my roof and gutters and had a problem because I had nowhere to store such a large ladder. On a whim, I just searched for ladder storage and this godsend popped up! My werner fiberglass ladder is quite heavy, so I was a little nervous about suspending it in the ceiling above my work area, but after reading the reviews and doing some research I was more comfortable with it. After it arrived I was even more comfortable because the hook was made of solid metal and was very sturdy, and the pulley system easily hoisted up the ladder with no effort. It's no secure in my rafters out of the way until I need it again!

Plastic Rope Cleat Broke While Installing It
The hardest part is trying to find the ceiling joists in which to drill the lag screws into. A nice quality stud finder was helpful for this. The pulley system works great, but I wished that the ladder would be a little closer to the ceiling. The ladder took up half of the appropriate foot that the lift will hang from the ceiling.
Unfortunately, after all the effort in getting the ladder lift installed and the ladder itself up, I accidentally broke the rope cleat while installing it on a wall. It did not take much for it to break. It's made of cheap plastic as opposed to the metal ones that comes with the Racor bike lift. I'm surprised and disappointed considering the rest of the product is made of steel. I didn't not want to go through the effort of taking the entire thing back down to return to 2DayDeliver for a replacement of the entire product so I'm stuck trying to buy a suitable replacement cleat.
I have emailed Racor, but I am not hopeful that they would be able to help me. It even says in the instructions:
" Limited Warranty: These products are sold “as is†without any express or implied warranties. "
UPDATE: Racor was quick to sent a replacement rope cleat with no questions asked. Updated rating to 4 stars.

Well Worth the Money
I needed to use this on my 40 foot extension ladder. There are two pieces to this unit. The permanent ladder holder was wide enough to stabilize the ladder. The rope lift worked very smoothly. I was very impressed with how well this worked. My only concern was the locking mechanism. I chose to add a screw eye high on the wall to extend the rope through. This ensured the locking mechanism would stay locked. Additionally, I purchased a metal dock cleat as an additional safety measure. if the locking mechanism failed in any way. One additional point - the screws provided were long enough so I was very comfortable with their use. I would buy this product again in a heart beat.
