2 Stars By RayB on 2016-03-23 Needs Seriously Upgraded Wiring and Hardware... Before Installing this strip LED, I tested it with the 12V battery supplied with an Alpena LED strip.
I really am growing weary of these absurd angel-hair wires and toy-like electrical connections. The wiring and connectors look like the insides of one of those $15.00 Syma RC Helicopters, and this is completely inappropriate for automotive applications, if you ask me.
My strip light was actually grounding out on the car body through the micron-thin insulation on those absurd wires... I remedied the grounding problem by sandwiching the flimsy wires between two pieces of electrical tape. And I secured all wires (after insulating them with electrical tape) to the car's body with Gorilla Tape.
I also Gorilla Taped the supplied connectors together, between the LED strip and the OEM bulb socket connector, and pinned these to the car body with Gorilla Tape as well. Why? Because "braided wires" are used in cars and motorcycles for good reason. The vibrations incurred in any vehicle will cause "solid wires" to fatigue and fail. And I don't have much faith in the few wisps of angel-hair wiring these products are fitted with!
The Chevy's OEM trunk light uses a 912 push-in bulb, and the push-in connection supplied with this LED strip light (it comes with two different styles of connectors designed to work in most OEM light sockets) gave me intermittent contact and a flickering light. So, using my fingernails, I stripped the wires back a little further (my real-world wire strippers won't even work on this flimsy stuff), and using the blade of a knife, I folded the wires over on themselves, ostensibly making them thicker. This completely remedied the twitchy contact, though I will maintain that the manufacturer should have provided a more substantial connector.
This LED strip is nowhere near as sturdily constructed as say the Alpena LED strips are. It looks pretty much like that bookcase LED lighting you can buy by the foot at Home Depot. With the Alpena strips, the LEDs and connections are sealed inside a half-round bead of silicone, while these are pretty much exposed. These seem barely suitable for automotive use in my opinion.
The transverse steel beam that spans the top of my trunk is angled on the inside towards the back seats, so I stuck the LED strip there, where it is invisible from the outside, and will be spared any impacts with whatever's loaded into the trunk (though there was barely enough wire to do this). The result is that the light from the LED strip shines deeply into the Impala's huge trunk, and is a definite--though less than thrilling--improvement over the OEM trunk light. This is that bluish-white LED light we've all grown familiar with.
The one real plus is that the two-way tape on this strip light actually stuck! Though I still tacked down the ends with two strips of Gorilla Tape.
It's an unsightly install if you ask me (I hate cobbled stuff), but you'd literally have to crawl inside the trunk to see it, so I'm living with it for now. And lighting-wise, it is an improvement.
This 18-SMD-5050 LED Strip Light for automotive trunks is a good idea that is weakly executed. And knowing what I know now, I would not have purchased it, and would not recommend it. An Alpena strip LED with better quality connections would be better, IMO. I may end up rigging an Alpena LED Strip or two in place of this one (though those have their issues too).
Please note that I have given other !JDMTOY products five star reviews, and I have found their customer service to be excellent, when I have contacted them. I did not contact them in this case, because, well, it is what it is...
I would readily welcome a $25.00 version of this idea, with serious wiring and quality hardware. Yes, I would spend that on a $34,000.00+ car!
4 Stars By Ab Vargas on 2015-09-09 Great light, not so good quality I ordered this light for a Mazda 3, and after a few hiccups the result is amazing. First, the construction quality is not very good. The wire is very thin and the connectors very flimsy. I received the unit with a loose terminal (see photo 1) Not a big problem if you are somehow handy. Second, the bulb adapter needs some work to be able to fit in the socket.I had to reduce the size using a cutter and a metal file so it can be inserted all the way. That alone had me initially angry with this product, but after seeing the difference I ended up giving it 4 starts. The before and after pics are taken with the same camera, same position with flash disabled. If you are not able to fix a possible defect, ask for help instead of going thru the hassle of returning it. it's worth the extra 15 mins fixing it.
5 Stars By Shawn O. on 1969-12-31 Light Strip Works great. Great Mod to Add Convenience to Your Car I really like this light strip. I installed in the trunk of my 2016 Sonata and the difference is really noticeable. I posted a picture and a video, which clearly shows the trunk is very well lit up, but neither really do it justice. It is super bright. The light the strip emits is a pure white light with just the slightest hint of blue. If you know anything about color temperature then I would equate the light to 6000K. The light strip included a universal festoon connection, which is basically a press to fit connector. It took me less than a minute to get the strip to light up and then it took me about 5 minutes to mount the strip to the roof of my trunk The strip does come with adhesive on the back but since the strip is rigid and the roof of my trunk is not perfectly flat I decided to mount it using a couple strips of velcro and it worked out great. I highly recommend this light strip. It is the least expensive I found and definitely did the job.
5 Stars By M. Meyer on 2015-01-12 Really makes a difference over the OEM light item shipped super fast. Was easy to install. I did dremel a sliver or groove into the existing light cover so the cover could close tightly without pinching the power wire leads. I can make simple alterations with a soldering and the wiring if it ever fails on me. for the price it was an incredible upgrade over the OEM lighting that is in the trunk of my Honda Civic 8th generation
3 Stars By K, C, and little j on 2016-11-02 Caused Electrical Problems with my 2016 Honda Accord I really liked the extra light this LED strip provided in my trunk. However it eventually caused electrical problems with my 2016 Honda Accord.
The connector is extremely cheap and I had problems installing it. The main problem being that the wire wouldn't consistently make contact with the Honda receptacle. But after pulling the wire out a little further from the housing, bending it into a U shape, which makes more surface contact for the wire to contact the receptacle. It suddenly worked consistently. I was happy.
For 2 months I did not have any problems and I was happy. However, one day on my commute home the TRUNK OPEN warning indicator kept coming on. I would pull off the road and open and shut the trunk and the indicator light would go off. But then 10 minutes later it would come on again.
Later, as I was shopping at a store, the car alarm started going off. I came out and shut it off. Then I locked the car and stood there for a few minutes to watch. Soon the car alarm started going off again. No one had touched it.
I removed this 18-SMD-5050-LED Strip Light and reinstalled the original OEM bulb. All of my electrical demons immediately went away and everything returned to normal. I waited a full 7 days before writing this review just to make sure I wouldn't have any more problems. And once I removed the 18-SMD-5050-LED Strip Light everything has remained fine.
4 Stars By W. Jones on 2015-03-03 Does what is says just wish it had the little things. The Flimsy litte adapter was a cute idea but its to flexible. Like replacing a light bulb with a slinky. It is bright as seen in the photo's. I had to get my own 3m double sided mounting tape and trim it to the length of the light bar. I like it and how it came out. I chose to keep my original light also, to keep the mounting of the new light strip tight. This light strip is extremely delicate so Im glad the mounting tape I bought was thick enough to help with shock.
4 Stars By John L. Tracy on 2017-04-12 Brighter than expected, short cables, easy to install. Like, super easy. Pros: Super cheap. Much brighter than I expected. No drilling necessary for my install (rear hatch on a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek). Comes with two types of bulb-replacement plug-ins for installation.
Cons: LEDs are not protected by any kind of housing. It's lasted so far, but definitely not water resistant. Smaller than I expected (but brighter too, so this doesn't matter).
Installation: I do Search and Rescue, so wanted a bright light on the hatchback lid so I could see what gear I was grabbing during a load-out. This strip comes with a plug that replaces the existing bulb (so no switches or fuses are required) It's really cool, because the light functions exactly like the factory light: coming on when the hatch opens, and fading out once it's closed.
The wire on the plug, and on the light, are about three inches long, so I stripped those and added my own 16 ga. I ran it up to the hatch, and used the adhesive backing on the light to make it stick.
It's been on there a month now with no issues. And not only does it provide a lot of light for the back, it lights up the surrounding area as well, which is great when you have a team needing to get ready in rough terrain.
If (when) this dies, I'll replace it with something more robust, but as a proof of concept, and for $10, I was impressed!
5 Stars By Puffin on 2016-03-24 Easy install & very bright Very easy to install and totally brightened up the light in my trunk. I can see everything I'm looking for now! I love that it came with 3M sticky side to freely attach it wherever I wanted. I would certainly buy this again if this ever were to go on the fritz or fall off.
4 Stars By 2DayDeliver Customer on 2015-01-18 Very bright, but wiring harness needs rethinking Well, this one is a hard one to rate without explaining the rating.
I'd give it a 5 for brightness. Its almost amazing how much light comes out of that strip. However the picture shown for the product may be a little misleading... at least it was to me. I would need two sets of strip lights to get the same illumination in the photo.
I'd give it a 3 for quick install. Like others said, the wire that would run between the existing trunk light socket and the center of the LED strip was too short for my car... that is if I wanted to mount the LED strip on center. I guess their assumption was that most trunks have light sockets mounted in the center of the trunk. I ended up unsoldering the wires on the strip light and soldered on a longer wire, thus making an extension, and used the same bulb socket/plug that came with the strip lights. That worked fine.
I'd also give the wiring harness/plugs a 3 for quality. Having read these reviews before installing I was VERY careful with the wires on the existing strip light when I received it and first started testing. I found that they only worked intermittently and it seemed to be an issue somewhere in the wiring or connectors. Again, once I soldered on my own connector, the intermittent behavior no longer occurred.
So, overall I would give the product a 4. That's because I am very happy to have found a compact and affordable set of bright LED lights that are relatively easy to mount into an existing socket... that coupled with the fact that I am handy enough to retrofit as needed.
I will be buying more of these in the future.

On a cold rainy night after I went to the mall my tire had a flat so I had to get the spare and jack out of the trunk and I could barley see anything from the standard light that was in my 05 Toyota Camry. This only took me about 3 minutes to see which adapter I needed, plug it in and center it to get the best light coverage. Now its pretty much like daylight in my trunk and I can grab my tools or anything out of my trunk without having to use my IPhone flashlight.
