Mini Maglite tail cap thread
This 5/8"-28 tap matches the thread in the tail of a 2AA Mini Maglite. I had a battery leak, and the resulting corrosion made it very difficult to unscrew the tail cap (I had to clamp it in a chuck). I eventually got it apart, extracted the batteries, and scraped out the residue, but the threads were badly galled. I used a needle file to clean up the external threads on the tail cap, but had to buy this tap to re-cut the internal threads.
Note that some internet sources say the Mini Maglite has a 27-pitch instead of a 28-pitch thread. While a 27-pitch thread would probably work just fine (since the threaded part of the cap is only about four threads long), I inspected the Maglite threads under a microscope with a thread gauge and I am certain it is actually 28 TPI. I had no problem re-cutting the internal threads with this tap, and the tail cap now screws right in.
Of course, for the price of this tap I could have just bought a new flashlight. But I generally err on the side of buying new tools, and these flashlights are very common (there are at least three in my household) so I'm sure this won't be my only opportunity to use it.

good for a project that doesn't need high quality , high dollar tools
This a Bottoming tap, not a taper thats pictured.
Nice cheap tap not labeled where made Marked HSS , size marking a little small, comes in plastic box to protect the cutting edges , I am using it for aluminum so it will be perfect for my application , teeth cut sharp , decent rake and relief grinds are decent but not polished . not a bad price for the size and application .

I would not recommend buying these taps
These are not 2-56 taps. I'm not sure what they actually are. I would not recommend buying these taps. You will end up frustrated with work not being able to be completed and have to return them anyways. DO NOT BUY!!!

Looks like good quality
Looks like good quality. I have not actually cut any new threads with it, but I did use it to chase threads in special about 40 steel nuts. I spun it in and out with a drill. It worked like a champ at this task. Cleaned up the threads nicely and didn't chip or break. One star off only because I haven't actually cut a new thread yet and can't say how well it works, or how long it lasts under tougher jobs.

This thread tap part worked as needed and was of a quality and consistancy that I required for my application. I separately purchased an oversized oil drain plug which used the same thread specificaitons as this tap so had to buy this threading tap.
Application: 2001 Hyundai Elantra GLS (Elantra XD series) 2.0 liter engine with a cast aluminum oil pan using an oversized drain plug with threads the same threads as this tap . I purchased this part to rethread the hole in the stripped out drain hole of the aluminum oil pan. In my application, I removed the oil pan from the car to perform all the work and to clean out the pan once I completed the work. I was able to rethread the existing oversized hole using this thread tap without redrilling the hole. Other applications may require an appropriate size drill bit to prepare a component part for being threaded with this thread tap.

For AN-12 threading
1-1/16 is used for AN-12 fittings.
Drill = 31/32 into aluminum.
HSS should stand up to mild steel.
This is one big tap, far outside the capability of my biggest T-wrench. Had to apply a 10 inch adjustable crescent.

I purchased this expecting to literally hand tap a hole. This is not the proper tap for that application. A gun tap is what I needed. Besides being the wrong tap, which is my fault, the tap itself seemed to be low quality.

Nice tap, wrong size.
I ordered an 18x1.5 tap and received a 14x1.25. the tap seems well made and i'll keep it, but as it is the wrong size i haven't had cause to use it yet.
Edit: having had cause to use this tap I have to say it worked great. I still have the lingering suspicion that they knew the likelihood of me returning a tool like this, at this price point, for being the wrong size was low...

Seemed high quality enough for my job. Worked fine bottoming out a blind hole in an E46 M3 cast iron diff housing.

This tap cuts good clean thread. Holds up to 4150 tool steel, stays consistant.
