BEWARE - It can become addictive!
Let me tell you a little about this electric smoker. Ours is over a year old now, so it has some use behind it.
It only needs minor assembly out of the box. - attaching handle, feet, etc. It does have wheels, so you can move it around a bit. They are small plastic coaster type wheels, so don't expect to be rolling it over rough areas or for long distances. The door has an adjustable latch on it, so as the seal gets squished a bit, you can make the latch tighter. I like having the glass door on the front, but I do have to admit that once you get some smoke rolling, and if you have moisture in there (from the meat or if you add it in the pan), the door is going to smoke and steam up pretty quickly and you won't be able to see inside for long. There is a light, but it is on the outside, and just reflects off the glass when the door is closed.
The racks inside are adjustable. I recommend taking the ones you aren't using out, so you don't have to clean them after using them. They scrub up pretty easily with soapy water.
I had quite a mess inside after the first few uses. Then I figured out how to make clean up easier. If possible, put your items in a disposable aluminum pan. I was worried it would keep the meat from getting smoky enough, but it wasn't a problem at all. You can also add liquid right to your pan if you want. (For instance I put apple juice in the pan with turkey breast to keep it moist.) The pan contains all the drippings and makes clean up a breeze. Also, wrap the drip deflector, water pan, and grease pan in foil! This is a huge help. Then instead of scrubbing after use, just toss the foil. I do not clean the walls of the smoker, as you want them seasoned. To easily clean the glass, use Weber's grill cleaner and rinse after with water. It makes clean up easy!
There is a built in meat thermometer that works very accurately. With the included remote, you can check on your meat temps without ever leaving your chair. We've had no problems with the remote.
After a year of moderate use, the temperature set button is not working on our front panel. They do sell replacement panels for the front, but the problem is easily remedied by simply using the remote to set the temp.
The wood chip tray works pretty easily. It does not hold a very large quantity at a time. So you do have to tend to your wood chips during your smoking. They will burn up within the first 30-45 mins if you are using dry chips. You can make them last longer by soaking them in water first. We usually keep the chips burning steady for the first part of cooking to add lots of smoke, and then let them die down near the end.
Masterbuilt does sell a lot of replacement parts for the unit. They sell a replacement heating element and it isn't very expensive. I've heard that is one of the first things to go. We bought an extra one with ours, but haven't had any issues with ours. It seems to hold the heat pretty well. Don't forget you will get fluctuations because there is air coming in from the chip tray and exiting out your vent. I've used it in temps of 30 degrees outside and it still worked well.
And the finished smoked product? EXCELLENT! We have not made a meal in this smoker that we did not love! There was not one piece of turkey left over on Thanksgiving day. We have mainly used it for meats, but have also smoked veggies in there as well. I've done some cheating as well. Take one of those rotisserie chickens from your local grocery and warm it up in the smoker, add some smoke, and get good smoked chicken in the time it takes you to warm it up.
I think the smoker has held up nicely. I like that replacement parts are available when something does go wrong. AND...the food tastes great! Beware, smoking your meats can become very addictive.

F.Y.I A LOT OF THE BAD REVIEWS ARE ON THE OLDER MODEL SMOKER. THIS IS THE NEWER MODEL AND YOU CAN BUY AND REPLACE THE HEATING ELEMENT IF IT EVER BURNT OUT.
this masterbuilt smoker works great for me even when using a extension cord. but if using one it be must be able to handle the power the smoker requires. I used a regular outdoor cord and it took my smoker forever to heat up. I ended up buying a (Yellow Jacket 2883 12/3 Heavy-Duty 15-Amp SJTW Contractor Extension Cord with Lighted Ends,25-Feet) bought on amazon and smoker heated up quick & worked it the way it was meant to work. this smoker is very easy to use and puts out good smoke although it does not put out smoke with temps under 200F not sure if that's because I use wet chips I haven't tried using dry chips yet. I'm very happy with this smoker so far I've only smoked ribs & chicken and turned out very good. there has been a lot of reviews about getting parts for this smoker & dealing with Masterbuilt customer service. I haven't dealt with C/S so I don't know about that as far as finding parts I found a place on the internet called APPLIANCE FACTORY PARTS that sells parts for model# 20070106 & model# 200709010 also I did not buy this smoker from 2DayDeliver got mine at WM but thought I would write a review anyway and I payed the same price that amazon sells it for but it took 2 weeks to get it from them.
6 MONTH UPDATE 11/23/12
well after 6 months and 200+ hours of smoking time, this smoker still works great. I've smoked snacking sticks, summer sausage, pulled pork, chicken, ribs, Canadian bacon,turkey, and venison and all turned out great. I never had any problems with the heating element, digital timer, or any other part of this smoker. as far as smoking/cooking I've never set the temp higher then 225 F when smoking, after a few hours of smoke I'll drop the temp down to 200 to 210 F to finish cooking, and use a wireless digital meat thermometer. I've kept mine outside all summer/fall and haven't noticed any signs of rust or any other signs of damage but I have a good cover for it. but I'll keep in the garage/shed over the winter. the cover I bought for this smoker is the Veranda Square 30" Smoker Cover for Price: $29.00 bought on amazon its a great cover. love this smoker. just remember keep it clean buy a water proof cover, if kept outside. if going to use a extension cord I recommend this one. 1 1/2 YEAR UPDATE
well after 1 1/2 years of use about 450+ hours this smoker still works great never had any problems at all with it. I did buy the cold smoker adapter for it and that works GREAT, I don't put chips in the main smoker anymore. the cold smoker adapter holds a lot more chips about three good handfuls and produces longer and better smoke then just using chips in the main smoker. you can run the main smoker and the cold smoker at the same time even when using a extension cord in fact I can run the main smoker, cold smoker and my Weber rotisserie at the same time without any problems. the extension I use is a (Yellow Jacket 2883 12/3 Heavy-Duty 15-Amp SJTW Contractor Extension Cord with Lighted Ends 25-Feet) and a ( yellow jacket 2' three plug adapter. again if you plan on keeping it outside make sure you buy a good waterproof cover the black masterbuilt cover is worthless. also I would not keep it outside in freezing weather the cold could damage the digital timer / temp gauge. I keep mine in the basement in the winter months when not in use and never had any smoke smells coming from it.

I would recommend to anyone and it is very easy to smoke ...
So far I have smoked ribs, a pork butt, and chicken. I almost wish I purchased the 40" to fit ribs and brisket without cutting them in half to fit on the grates. Also, the built-in meat probe is sketchy and I would suggest buying a legit one to make sure your meats are cooked to the correct internal temperature. I would recommend to anyone and it is very easy to smoke the food you want.

We love it so far
Gave it to my husband for Father's Day. We love it so far! The temperature is really easy to set and I like the side wood loader. I will say that the wood loader is pretty cheaply made and stiff to get out. It is also annoying to have the water pan directly under your meat and defeats the purpose of the drip pan at the bottom. We have started putting foil on the water basin and drip pan for easier clean up. It would also be nice to have a place on either side for easier moving. We cannot leave ours outside so we have to lift from the very bottom, which can be awkward. Overall very happy with this purchase and the delicious food coming from it. I would recommend it to any beginner in smoking.

A Great Little Electric Smoker
This is a darn good little smoker! I paired it with the Masterbuilt 20070112 Cold Smoking Kit and burn my wood chips in that. I can get six hours of continuous smoke going through this unit. The smoker holds temperature quite well and I really need not fuss with it once I hit the temps I want. I do use a digital thermometer at the grate and adjust my smoker thermostat according to the temps my thermometer gives me. However, I haven't noticed any problems with the thermostat reading on the smoker unit itself. It seems pretty solid. I am enjoying this product and so is my family!

Fantastic. The only downside for me is that the heating element stopped working after a couple months. After talking to customer service they sent the replacement part and it only took a couple days to get here which was nice. After installing the heating element it worked perfectly! Thanks you for the excellent customer service Masterbuilt and because of that you get five stars!

Smoking Made Easy!
My husband found out about this through some work buddies who were raving about what a good job it did. When he described what it looked like, I found the Masterbuilt models on 2DayDeliver. I read a number of the reviews and it sounded like many preferred the old generation models. I decide to purchase the Masterbuilt Old Generation 30-Inch Electric Smokehouse Smoker with Window for my husband for Father's Day. I thought he would really like it, and I would get the added bonus of some awesome food!
The first attempt was a brisket and a turkey breast. The brisket was too big to fit comfortably in the unit. The inside width is less than 15 inches. He just squeezed it in! It turned out great despite being kind of crammed in. The turkey breast was on the upper shelf and it did not take as long as the brisket. I don't think I have ever had a better smoked turkey breast!
The second attempt was pork ribs. They cooked pretty quickly but were also delicious!
I wish that there would have been some sort of a guide included for how to cook different items, but we seem to be doing pretty well just experimenting. We are very pleased with this purchase, and it makes the whole process of smoking meats so easy!

Works great -- with a few quirks
4 month update: Still in love with it and use it at least once a week. Works great and easy to maintain -- just keep the drip pan, water pan and grates clean.
Maintains a constant temperature that's very close to the control setting. Easy to add wood, and pretty easy to clean. The only thing I don't like is the time/temperature display -- it's impossible to read even on a cloudy day. So to read it you end up shading it with your hands and getting your face right down there by the display -- which is where the smoke vents. The good news is that there's not much need to read it. I love this thing.

Wish I had bought this a long time ago.
Wanted a smoker and did a lot of research. I didn't want something that would be difficult to use but still gave a good end result. THIS WAS IT! I've used it a bunch of times for ribs, pulled pork, and chicken. Perfect results every time. Friends, family, neighbors all have said the food was as good as any they have ever had. Had to be true since they went back for seconds and thirds. Wish I had bought this a long time ago. Hate to admit to how many racks of ribs I ruined on the grill. Worth every penny.

I got this for my roommate as a present and think I use it more than him.
Since I purchased it I know of 2 other people that have purchased it after having seen how easy it is to use and tasting how great the food turns out. It is very well built and pretty easy to clean. It has so much room inside but takes up so little space on our back porch. At one point we had 3 whole chickens and 4 1.5lb racks of baby back ribs smoking at one time. The smoky flavors are amazing and the compartment on the side to add wood chips is genius. Holds temp great. We have smoked in some pretty cold temps and this smoker keeps it right at what you want.

Grest Smoker,Bad Remote Battery Spring,Bad water deflector pan,No Extended Warranty offered.
It's a good (Great) smoker But...
The Water Deflector,pan track,on the right side of the track where the 6 tack welds are,3 of them were Broken upon arrival,looks like mfg. Machine tack weld defects.
Also: The Remote control,on one side where the Larger Bottom Battery ,has a Recessed hole through the circuit board,apparently to compensate for the larger spring,which results in the spring NOT making the correct contact W/the bottom battery,placing a piece of cardboard under it,takes care of the problem.I'll
I called MASTERBUILT ,They are going to send abother (Backordered) waterborne Deflector, and another remote, W/no guarantee that the next remote will not be the same,and if it is,nothing can be done,but Place cardboard under the Spring.They did say that,I c old keep both current items with not having to return them,when the replacement items arrive.
ALSO: After (When) I purchased the smoker through AMAZON, NO Extended Warranty was offered.I called MASTERBUILT,But they only offer the 90 Day warranty,they currently HAVE NO Extended Warranty Available.
I was told that only certain stores where purchased, might offer It.The reason I bought this one through AMAZON, was because they were the only one who had this model,and (Remodeled,updated) ,masterbuilt didn't have it available,nor anyone else.
I was informed,to try to go back to AMAZONS Web site,look under,warrantys,then "Other" Warrantys, through: "Square Trade"...
Which I'm currently in the Process of attempting to do...Also: I purchased, The Masterbuilt Slow (Cold) Smoker, "ADD ON", for Electeonic/Digital, models ,from: "HOME DEPOT" for $69.00,just bought it yesterday,waiting for it to arrive...Well worth the Extra $69.00 +CA. Tax (Free Shipping).

Love it, even with temperature readout problems
I'm pretty happy with this smoker, with a couple of exceptions (mentioned later). But first, I will say that this thing is really easy to use. The setup was easy and I have smoked some great food so far. I have never used a smoker before, and this makes the process very easy. (FYI: I also joined a great Masterbuilt electric smoker group on Facebook, and reading through the posts there has been incredibly helpful when deciding on recipes, cooking temps, etc.) My family loves it when I make dinner, and we've had great turkey, pulled pork, and chicken. This thing makes GREAT food!
I learned the hard way, however, that my temperature sensor is not correct. (Not a meat probe, but the cooking temperature. This model doesn't come with a meat probe). I purchased a digital thermometer and meat probe unit so that I can monitor the meat temperature and the cooking temperature. The smoker temp is routinely off by about 30 degrees. For example, if I set the smoker at 225, the actual temp is 195. I first noticed this because my digital thermometer read a cooler temp than the smoker readout. I purchased an oven thermometer so that I would have one more source for comparison. The oven thermometer and the digital thermometer matched, and both were 30 degrees colder than the smoker temp readout. I have not contacted Masterbuilt about this yet, but I'm hoping that they will have a solution. In the meantime, I know to follow the temp reading on my digital thermometer instead.
This isn't a complaint against the smoker, but want to mention it. I purchased a smoker stand that is for "Masterbuilt 30" smokers", which was recommended as an attachment for this product. Although I made it work, the stand that was recommended didn't actually fit my smoker. The holes on the stand don't match the feet on my smoker. I was able to get two of them to match up, so it works well enough. So if you buy a stand, make sure it fits your model.
This isn't a complaint agains the smoker, either. But now that I have used this 30" smoker a few times, I think I wish I had gotten the 40". This one isn't small. It can certainly hold most of what you want to smoke. But now that I have the smoking bug, I can see that I might want a bigger space inside. I smoked a 10 pound turkey at Christmas and it fit just fine. I'm not sure a 13+ pound would fit, though.
All in all, I'm loving this smoker and the food I can make with it.

Electric is the way to go ! Low and slow !!!!
I have used this several times now, it is exactly what I expected! The very first time I used the smoker I did (2) full pork butts. Smoked the butts for over 14 hours and the meat was very juicy and tender. I am very happy buying the electric smoker. My brother bought the LP gas smoker same unit and his food cooks way to quickly and has a charred burnt flavor. Not what I want to eat. With the electric units, you can cook very slow and with lots of smoke. NOTE: you must soak the wood chips at least 20 minutes before placing them in the smoker. Dry chips smoke very quickly and then require replacement to often. Soaked chips smoke slower and do not require replacement as often.
Recommendation: Season the butts thoroughly as least 24 hours before smoking. I used a dry rub that I purchased from my local butcher. The meat turned out awesome!

It is VERY easy to use and understand.
I bought this for my mom, as she was not so subtley dropping hints this was what she wanted at Christmas time. I surprised her with it as she came home. She immediately went out and bought meat and wood and has smoked something in it every Sunday since she got it. It is VERY easy to use and understand. It is a great size for a small family. She's a single mother so she cooks a whole weeks worth of food in there at one time. I'm considering getting my boyfriend and I one as he is EXTREMELY jealous when I get some of her cooking and he doesn't, it's just that good. She has it down pack and the meat just melts in your mouth.
A friend told us that you only use fruit woods, and stick an open can of beer in there for the moisture. It has worked every time!

Excellent - Good Luck on Shipping
We cannot say enough great things about this product. My wife is a gourmet cook and she has so much fun with this unit.
However, since 2DayDeliver cheaped out on shipping, the service has suffered. I found this unit on my front porch with a 4 inch gash on the bottom corner. It had been dropped and the side of the gash split. The unit itself was exposed through the gash and the housing was bent. Fortunately I could a assemble the unit and it's interior was not damaged.

Everything has turned out perfectly on the smoker!
I've owned my smoker for about 3 months and I cook on it about two to three times per month. It has been very simple to use and does a great job holding the setpoint temperature. I use a digital probe so that I can be alerted when the meat has reached the proper temperature I suggest that you purchase one of those as well for worry-free smoking of your meat. I find the cooker to be very simple to clean grills and other interior parts that can get greasy from the meat. This is a very well designed yet simple smoker/slow cooker.

What I Expected and What I needed
I would consider myself a beginner to intermediate when it comes to smoking. I've owned Brinkmann water smokers in the past and they are OK for small loads of meat. I wanted an insulated electric smoker so that I could still smoke meats during an Iowa winter. This unit satisfies that need.
When it arrived very little assembly was required, I had it up and ready for seasoning in 15 minutes.
The first thing I smoked was a 12 pound pork butt. It was a snowy day, but the smoker got up to temp inside of 20 minutes. At 12 pounds this roast was huge as a first try on a new smoker, but it was what i had. It took over 14 hours for the roast to hit 200+ degrees. Given the humidity and the size of the roast I'm not surprised.
The first butt was a success as were both of the next roasts that I've smoked. While the smoker can handle almost any size, I prefer to keep the starting weight at around 7 to 9 pounds in order to keep the cooking time reasonable.
The smoker's digital thermostat isn't particularly accurate since it is located at the top of the box rather than beside the smoking rack. I found it to be reading about 12 to 15 degrees high compared to a digital thermometer probe right of the rack. I strongly recommend a remote digital like the Maverick ET-733 ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P2RDIFK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ).
I also purchased the smoker stand to get the unit up off the ground and at a more convenient height.

The best smoker I have ever owned
This is a fantastic smoker! It arrived 3 weeks ago and I have smoked, ribs, brisket, butt, shoulder, duck, sausage, pork loin and pork belly and they all were wonderful. It is easy to use and easy to clean. The temperature stays on point, the wood chips are easy to load and the rack hold a lot of whatever you are smoking!
I highly recommend - in fact a great friend of mine ordered one the day after i did and loves it too! Your smoker friends will give you grief because it is not "real" smoking and all I have to say is I am not staying up all night trying to maintain the temp and load wood and when it's time to eat all I hear is compliments.

Only One Obvious Flaw
I've only used it once so far, but the results have been excellent. The cooking and flavor is up to you, so I'll just review the hardware.
It's lighter than I expected, but certainly durable. You can adjust to seal the door tighter if you like. It didn't get as hot to the touch on the outside as I thought it would. So, accidental burns shouldn't be a worry from the outside. Read the safety precautions and instructions. They are very clear on what you should and should not do. (Especially on how to set time and temp because you must do both at the same time.)
The racks and internal stuff are a bit thinner/more lightweight than I expected, but not flimsy. It's still durable, but light enough to help with the overall weight of the unit.
Cleaning is a bit dirty, but it is what it is. Don't hose the unit, but you can take the drip pans and stuff out and hose that off.
Honestly, the biggest negative is the digital display is super hard to read in daylight. You have to block the sun to read it. It's certainly not a deal breaker, but it is what makes this unit only 4 out of 5 stars.
I find it regulates temp well. It'll go high and low depending on opening and steaming, etc. But, it recovers just fine. It takes 20-30 mins to preheat.
I cooked 2 different meats on it on one day and I am very satisfied. I have only used it once, so take this review for what it's worth.
