Everything I was looking for!
I purchased this for my 3 year old son for his birthday. It was a gift to replace the iPad (that is mine, that I reclaimed!). We purchased this tablet because we wanted a learning device that was easy to use. After going through the Kids Kindle Fire (that is not small kid friendly) we decided on a more kid friendly route and grabbed a more educational LeapFrog.
I cannot begin to say how happy I am with this product.
This tablet was so simple to set up and use that my 3yo has never had a single issue with it. The games are downloadable via WiFi and you can get cartridge games (we have both).
You can download movies, tv shows, music, etc.
The best part about this tablet? YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE CONNECTED TO WIFI TO USE IT!
The one thing that's pretty annoying about the iPad and Kindle Fire is that you must be connected to WiFi to actually play games or watch shows. No wifi is required for this which makes it awesome on long trips, winding down at the lake, the beach, etc.
Oh, and did I mention that this is for 3-9 years? Yes! I don't have to purchase another tablet for a while! Although the games are slightly pricey, it's completely worth it. I'm so glad that I just bit the bullet and got this!

Great for first time buyers but if you already have a LeapPad Ultra, wait to upgrade
When LeapFrog came up with the LeapPad Ultra in 2013, I was blown away by how much better it was than previous LeapPad versions. Nearly 2 years later, when I heard that LeapFrog was coming up with a newer version of the LeapPad -- the LeapPad Platinum -- I was so excited to see what improvements they would come up with and what new bells and whistles it would come with. When LeapFrog sent me a review unit (green) to try out, I decided to gift it to my 5 year-old niece.
PROS: My nieces loves her new LeapPad Platinum! Her eyes lit up when she first saw it, and now she carries it around with her everywhere and calls it her special iPad. She plays on her parents' tablet and phones all the time, so she was able to get up and running and start having fun on the LeapPad Platinum right away. She loves taking selfies of herself and her little sister just like her parents do on their phones! The new Imagicard feature (a set of special cards that kids can scan into the LeapPad Platinum and have the characters on the cards come to life on the LeapPad Platinum) is icing on the cake. She's already a big fan of Paw Patrol, so she was amazed that she could scan Imagicard with the LeapPad Platinum and see her favorite Paw Patrol characters join the videogame she is playing. I've always said that the LeapPad is the perfect kid-friendly tablet and the perfect alternative to letting your kids play on your phone or tablet, and the new Platinum version is no different. It really does give kids hours of educational fun right out of the box, without any of the set-up headaches that plague parents when they try to make their devices kid-safe.
CONS: Most of the features found in the LeapPad Platinum are the exact same features that I was so excited to see on the Ultra: the 7" hi-res screen, 8 GB memory, Wifi capability, kid-safe browser, 2MP front and back camera, 480p video, accelerometer, rechargeable battery. The battery life of the Platinum (5 hrs) is actually less than the Ultra (8hrs)! I was disappointed to see that the Platinum was so similar to the Ultra. Pretty much the only new feature is the Imagicard technology. Don't get me wrong, Imagicard is an awesome technology and it certainly enhances the educational and entertainment experience for kids.... but the Platinum sells for $129, whereas the Ultra can be found on sale for $64.99 (it originally sold for $149). Is the LeapPad Platinum worth the price premium? You decide!

Cant say enough about this game system. I
would recommend this product strongly. The only problem I
am having is I cant get online because product was returned to 2DayDeliver
and previous owner put password I cant break to
get online. 2DayDeliver will
probably fix. I would
advice not getting a refurbished because of having other peoples
passwords. Other then that, great product.

Not as durable as I thought....
The Platinum LeapPad WAS ok for my 4 year old but it is very limited what you can do and you have to buy all these apps for it from their app store so I couldn't put Curious George or any PBS stuff on it. And now, 13 months after purchase, just when my kid seems actually interested in it, it has a crack inside the shatter proof screen cover and we can't see anything. We didn't have any big accident with it or other notable incident and now it's just garbage. They won't cover repairs or let me get the screen fixed. I bought this because I thought it was sturdier then the other pads. This thing barely got used, lived in our car and must have drop from the car seat to the floor and broke. Very disappointed.

it started lagging really bad and freezing to the point where he didn't want ...
We purchased this tablet for my son and used it for about six months before we started having problems with it. We didn't download anything for him, and he only had three cartridges for games. It wasn't connected to the internet and he only played it when he was on the couch so no chances of it getting ruined since we paid so much for it. After six months, it started lagging really bad and freezing to the point where he didn't want to play with it anymore because he was getting so frustrated with it. It got put up on the shelf for the past year. I just picked it up to try and reset it up for him as he is getting into Kindergarten and we want him to be focusing more on learning and the thing won't even turn on unless it's plugged in. It won't charge at all. When we plug it in, it shows the green light that it's fully charged but the low battery symbol shows up on the screen. Then because it hasn't been used in so long it promps for a software update but won't do the update. According to Leap Frog that means there is a file corrupted, but when we try to connect it to our computer to fix it, it won't turn on at all. We emailed Leap Frog about possible solutions, even if it meant us mailing it in for repair and they basically told us, our loss go buy a new one. I'm going to try and find a solution on my own online since Leap Frog seems to think we're all made of money. I'm super not happy with the situation though and only trying to salvage this thing because I paid almost $300 for the package when I bought it (because I bought the tablet, the rubber protector, the carrying case and three games). Don't waste your money, seriously. If you really want a Leap Frog Tablet, get one of the cheaper ones that still works with the games and whatever. I won't be buying another one again.

Bigger screen, better graphics
This is perfect for my two great-nephews. They are 1 1/2 and almost 2 years and this LeapPad Platinum is even better than the ones we got for our 3 1/2 year-old twin grandchildren.
The screen is much bigger and the tablet itself seems sturdier and better protected. (Our granddaughter just dropped her LeapPad we got her for Christmas and it bit the dust.)
The pictures and videos are much better quality, too. I was allowed to choose one game and I chose the coloring game - very fun.
I also bought a game cartridge LEARNING FRIENDS PRESCHOOL ADVENTURES and it was okay. It's too bad the games are pretty expensive because they are colorful and fun but it's difficult knowing which one to choose.
I like the LeapSearch option. The boys will be able to "surf the net" but are only able to access kid friendly sites in a number of categories, such as Music, Cartoons, Animals, Sports and many more. You need internet access for this.
The controls are pretty basic with an on-off button, menu button, and arrow wheel. The rest of the tablet is touch screen and a stylus comes with the tablet.
There are front and back facing cameras that take okay pictures. The cameras are easy to use.
The tablets come ok installed with some apps - Music, Pet, Photo Fun - to name a few.
This is a fun tablet for smaller children, I would say under the age of 10. Once they get older, a Kindle or more advanced tablet will make them happier, I am sure.
NOTE: I received this product in exchange for my honest review.

My daughter loves her leap pad. I love that I control her time and her breaks from using it. I love that are so many fun and educational games that you can get to play on here so they are not looking for things online or anywhere that I cannot see what they are doing.

Junk made by a junk company.
This thing has given my kids nothing but problems. Constantly freezes up on them. We tried installing a game we bought in the App Store and damn near bricked the device. I had to follow some poorly written instructions to wipe and reset to factory defaults to get it working again. Even after, the tablet still freezes. Their support is nonexistent as well. I’ve tried calling the number and either get no answer or the automatic message says I’m calling outside of business hours.. I’m not! They also never answered any of my email I’ve sent. Will never buy another leapfrog device. Ever.

Our Toddler LOVES His LeapPad..and So Do We !!
Our 2 1/2 year old LOVES his "FrogPad" as he calls it. Seriously, LOVES it!!! He has quickly mastered this electronic device beyond our belief and has learned a lot from the learning games and videos. We have purchased several add-on apps and they have been a great addition to his learning experience, especially since he can watch the TV show and then play the corresponding game. What we love most is that he has a natural love of learning and this product truly reinforces that for him...win!!! We are actually on our second LeapPad because the first one...well, letʻs just say it went missing one night, and our son was so upset, as were we...only to discover it in the garden (of all places!) the next day AFTER a big rain storm; guess he thought it would be fun to take it outside without our realizing it. Ugh. There were lots of tears when it was clear that it was dead to the world after spending a few days in a bag of rice to help dry it out. Thank goodness grandma came to the rescue and bought him a new one, which he was beyond thrilled about. Games reloaded, he was ready-to-go. Then, the other night, I accidentally plugged in the old LeaPad thinking it was the new one...and wouldnʻt you know it, the thing started up without a hitch. WHAT!?!? hahaha, so now we have 2 LeaPAds and he couldnʻt be happier, because when he misplaces one (like in the sea of couch cushions)...we have the other one as a backup. The moral of this long winded review is that this LeapPad is awesome and we love that you can download games or use a cartridge when the memory gets full. You can also uninstall games to make room for new ones, etc. I do wish it had more memory, but for now it is perfect. Highly recommend!!

Software and support issues!
While I think it’s a great tool for kids to learn, this leap pad kept in good condition is having problems uploading and operating properly.
We go to load updates and reset and the leap pad automatically shuts down in the middle of it. I don’t have time to sit and watch download for 30 minutes. This is making me not want to buy another for next child. I may go the abc mouse on tablet route.
