I have a rescue pug,,she was in a cage for several years while she produced many litters. The breeders then dumped her by the side of the road once they realized that she was filled with worms,,,heart worms included. The pound picked her up, weighing less than 14 pounds,,and for a pug, that is almost unheard of!. Luckily Compassionate Pug Rescue took her from the pound.
Our pug, after all these experiences, came to us with some weird anxiety issues. Right after a meal she would lick her face incessantly. Perhaps this started as a way of getting every crumb of food off of her face,,,they obviously didn't feed her enough. But the face licking then became an anxiety issue. I first tried the aroma infuser. It didn't seem to have any effect on her.
I just got this coat in yesterday. Did I mention that our pug is very food focused? Yesterday my husband was cleaning the barbecue grill on the patio. Our pug paced back and forth, whining, wanting to get out to the grill and "get some grease". Finally I decided to try the coat,,,instantly she calmed down and fell asleep by the fire. Then this morning, after her breakfast, the face licking started. I wrapped her in the coat and pet her while the licking slowly decreased. She is now sleeping peacefully in my chair.
I needed to look at the instructions for wrapping this coat on her, but once I figured it out,it was easy. It is light and washable. I am very pleased with the effect is has on our pug, Pixel.

updated - caused a sore on my foster dog!
I am horrified to say that after 6 weeks or regular use with no incidents, I took this off my foster dog to be washed, as I do weekly, and he screamed! I picked him up & noticed blood on my shirt. I quickly scanned him over and found a sore on him from where this shirt had RUBBED HIM RAW! I have other foster dogs who wear other brands of shirts & none have ever had this problem. I have 2 other dogs who wear “compression shirts” nonstop due to their incredible anxiety, and in all my years of rescue, I have never had one cause sores. Needless to say, I will not be using this shirt again! And of all dogs, this was the most fearful dog I have. I can only hope I didn’t do more damage to him.
*****below was my original review*****
I volunteer with a not for profit small dog sanctuary. We take in abused dogs, some have been damaged, used as bait dogs, beaten by their previous owners... some are just mysteries. I got this for a tiny chihuahua-mix who cowered in the corner & screamed when frightened. I’m pleased to say that this has been helpful. After noticing that he was comforted when held tightly. After reading a couple reviews that pointed out how this was a lighter made material, I took a risk on this vs the thunder shirt.
This poor dog needs to have this on all the time, and would be far too warm with his long coat (we live in Florida) I noticed that he seems happier, more confident, and willing to come around with other dogs. He still won’t go outside, but his tail is wagging and the screaming has been minimal now. I’d call this a very useful tool, especially as a daily wear item. Combined with clicker training, praise, and positive reinforcement, this is definitely worth the price.
As others mentioned, use CHEST SIZE to order. My guy is 8 lbs and I ordered the XS. It was almost too large for him. I’m going to wash in hot to shrink it a bit if possible. Will add to the review if anything eventful happens after washing. ;)
I would order again. And I will if I need another once this little guy is rehomed. Excellent investment.

AKC Calming Coat in Pink, XS - Miniature Dachshund
I bought the AKC Calming Coat for my 13 year old, 9 lb Miniature Dachshund after we lost our 7-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier. Weiner suffered *severe* separation anxiety & this seemed to calm her down. It was recommended by a friend who bought one for her dog for a flight they were taking. We got the XS in Pink, it fits perfectly & I cannot complain about the sewing or the material. When I wash it, like *all* washable items with Velcro, I attach the two sides to themselves so the hooks don't catch on anything else in the load. It's been a year, now, & I'm just *now* starting to see where the Velcro is coming loose around the neck, but I have a sewing machine so this will be no problem. I'm currently looking into buying one for our new American Staffordshire Terrier, but I'm having trouble deciding between the L & XL as the length from nape of neck to tail isn't listed. Therefor I am adding that the length of the XS from back of neck to tail is 8.75". I hope this review helps someone to make the purchase, it has been worth it for us, if not 100% for the anxiety, it has been an *adorable* sweater that gets Weiner lots of compliments because of its color & how well it fits.

YASS!! The whining finally stopped!
My Shih Tzu Dachshund (Schweenie breed) was abused by his previous owner and has extreme separation anxiety. He has several behavioral issues as a result. We've tried a number of things to help him deal with his anxiety (which presents itself as excessive barking, whining and aggression). My husband often gives into the whining that occurs when he has to leave the house by taking him with him wherever he goes. This also poses another issue, when our Schweenie, Rufus, is in the car he often barks at people, at nothing, he has even ripped the wires out of our back window that control the defrost. He thinks that everything around him, real or imagined, is a threat. Today, my husband put Rufus in the car (as he often does) without the jacket. Rufus immediately (as usual) started barking like a mad-man at the wind blowing, at people, at nothing - like he does. I ran inside and got the jacket, put it on him, and the barking stopped INSTANTLY. My husband and I walked away from the car, just to see what would happen. To my surprise, NOTHING. Not a peep. People walked by, no barking. The wind blew, he didnt move - just watched. I was SHOCKED to say the least. We adopted Rufus 2 years ago and this is the first thing that has really worked to help manage his anxiety. I have already ordered a backup. I am a believer. If you have a pup, like Rufus who cries when you leave, barks at everything he considers a threat, gets upset by loud noises -- give this a try. I hope that you find that you're as genuinely surprised as we are. UPDATE: Rufus got very upset when I tried to take it off of him. Once I was able to get it off of him, he pouted. I think he loves it too.

This product works wonder! I was VERY VERY skeptical of all calming products out there on the market as I have tried severals and unfortunately none has shown any effectiveness. It gets expensive and I think many of you might have the same struggle.
The problem I was having was that my whole family has decided to go on a month long trip. I used to have two dogs and they were bff. Unfortunately have to re-home one of the dog because he was a foster and my other dog did not take that very well. He doesn't show much sadness when I'm home with him but boy once I leave the house he gets so anxious and starting to howls irrationally. I would have thought that the howling would stop after the while but everytime I check on him on the security camera he would consistently howling loudly and depressingly. Whenever I get home I noticed that his voice was all hoarsed . I was very concerned about the situation so I have to try everything I could. The shirt arrives quickly (thank you 2DayDeliver Prime!) The minute I tried it on my dog I could almost count the minute it took him to fall asleep! He usually would not fall asleep while I'm awake so I really do believe the shirt has much to do with it. He tried monitoring him with the camera from outside of the house and he was able to wait for me to come back with patience. I was so amazed with what the product could do. It really gets your money worth.
The only confusing thing I have ordering this product was the sizing. I wouldn't consider my dog to be a mini so I ordered a small but it doesn't quite fit. I had to secure the shirt with pins but it still works fine. I will order another one in xs but I really have a feeling that it might be too small for him. Going potty can be a bit challenging but other than that this shirt is a total lifesaver. It doesn't cost that much and your can wash it regularly. If it doesn't work for your pup as a calming shirt it would still can be use to keep your pup warm on the cold weather. This is a total win-win

Great for doggie stress
My Wilbur recently discovered he had a fear of fireworks (after 3 1/2 years). He'd been around them before, had seen them, heard them, etc., and yet he didn't have a fear of them until this past Memorial Day. That day, he dissolved into a puddle of nervous shaking, whining, and sitting on me for comfort. I tried calming music, turning up the TV to drown it out, giving him treats as a distraction, giving him doggy xanax from the vet, and all of the things you read about doing to help a scared dog. I bought this to see if it would work, and it does make a difference. Is he perfectly happy and normal acting wearing it while fireworks are going off? No, but he's much better than he is without it. And he gets excited when I pull it out of the closet to put it on him. He seems to really like it, and since it at least takes the edge off, I feel like it's worth it. He still stays very alert and isn't thrilled when fireworks are going off, but it stops the shaking. So far, his fear of fireworks hasn't extended into a sudden fear of thunderstorms, so that's a plus, but if it does at some point, then I'll put him in this wrap.
Sizing: I bought the size recommended based on measurements (against my better judgment), and it came in WAY too big. I returned it and ordered the next size down, and to be honest he could have worn yet another size down. I just didn't feel like returning it again. My dog is a lab mutt with a big barrel chest and weighs in at about 60lbs, so just use your best judgment when ordering.

We have another (a female) that has is a Pit GSH mix which doesn't like to be without it even to launder
I ordered a large for my rescued Staffie Bull Terrier. He weighs 60 lbs. and has 29.5 -30" chest depending on who is doing the measuring. It was way too tight. No problem I will give it to a local rescue group and ordered a Large. Not sure WHY as he seemed to be dead on, but he is rather stocky. We have another (a female) that has is a Pit GSH mix which doesn't like to be without it even to launder. She was scared of any load noise and we live just a few miles from and military artillery base. and near idiots that think the 4th of July is year around. It definitely helps and keeps her out of closet whining and shivering.. He is not so nervous as they are both pampered and feels he needs one too.

To say that I hate this product is way too strong
To say that I hate this product is way too strong. I just didn't see that it made much difference. My standard poodle is petrified of thunderstorms and here in South Florida we are in the midst of the rainy season. I bought the AKC wrap and tried it for several weeks, but my dog would just stand shaking and panting with or without it. I noticed one day that he got into a tight space between the arm of a daybed and the wall. He also would go into our pantry off the kitchen, shut the door and try to move the things out from under the shelf in the corner. I decided to move the stuff out of the corner and put a mat in there. He now spends his time in there when it thunders or rain, and while he's very alert during those times he isn't panting and shaking. I'm sure the AKC wrap isn't harmful in any way, it just didn't do it for my dog.

Our dog hates thunderstorms and fireworks especially. Every year he is a shaking mess in July and of course our neighbors make it a week long affair. I ordered this for him just in time to come in for the 4th and he literally laid down and went right to sleep with it on. I tried an ace bandage wrap on his body last year and it didn't do anything so I was skeptical. But I'm glad I decided to try it out anyway, he had no problems this year.
For sizing, his neck is about 21 inches, so I ordered this in a medium (he's a fat shih tzu, about 25lbs) and it fit great in the neck, but it fit just barely around the stomach. So if your dog has a pretty big belly, then you might want to go a size up. I included a picture, can't figure out how to rotate it on this device, but you get the idea

Sizing and outcome
My dog is an Australian Cattle Dog Pit mix. She is 43 pounds. I bought the medium and it was too small. I pulled it and stretched it out so that it fits her. I bought the medium because it says up to 50 pounds and she is not 50 pounds.
I put it on her and we went in the car. It was great. She also wore it to the do park and seemed more relaxed.
(Pictures are of her at a nursing home rocking her thunder shirt.)
