Special "extra" features specific to the Vivarium Electronics VE-300 Thermostat include; 1) pulse proportional style OR on/off style thermostat operation, 2) high/low temp alarms, 3) high/low temp history storage, 4) built-in "Night Drop" capability, 5) clock battery backup.
Standard features found on both Vivarium Electronics VE-100 and VE-300 Thermostats include; 1) a 700 watt capacity with user-replaceable fuse protection from power surges, 2) displays probe temp, set point and current time on full back-lit display, 3) remembers settings during power failure, 4) a 10' probe cord, 5) grounded receptacle designed for outlet strip use, 6) safety backup relay shutoff cuts all output power if the probe temperature reading rises more than 6 degrees above the set point, 7) silent operation, 9) convenient table top mounting, 10) multiple units can stack for neat, professional appearance.
What is a proportional style thermostat? Similar to an on/off style thermostat, a proportional thermostat has a probe that tells it when heat needs to be turned "on" or turned "off". Unlike an on/off style thermostat, a proportional thermostat also works like a dimmer in that it can adjust the amount of voltage being applied to the heating device. But it's better than a dimmer because it can measure the temperature and it knows exactly how much power needs to be applied to the heating device to maintain the desired temperature. The very small "slop" in proportional thermostats is usually measured in 1/10 degrees. The two examples of proportional thermostats are the Dimming Proportional Thermostat and the Pulse Proportional Thermostat; such as the VE-300 when used in proportional mode. In this mode, the VE-300 "pulses" electricity to the heater. These "pulses" can be short pulses if the temperature is close to the set temperature, or can be long pulses, if the temperature is too low. This type of thermostat works very well in accurately controlling many types of heaters; including our Reptile Basics Radiant Heat Panels.
The VE-300 has three alarm functions. 1) The "Sensor Failure alarm" cannot be disabled by the user. This alarm constantly monitors the output of the digital probe to ensure that the signal the thermostat is receiving is not corrupted. Should the probe cord be severed, the probe unplugged or the sensor fail, the VE-300 will immediately turn off the heater output, flash an error message on the display and sound the buzzer. This will continue until the fault is corrected. 2) The "Temperature Overshoot alarm" will occur when the actual probe temperature exceeds the setpoint by 4 or more degrees. The alarm can be temporarily silenced by depressing the "enter" key. The alarm will automatically reset itself once the fault has been corrected. An example of this would be the overshoot sometimes seen with an aggressive heater during initial setup. Once the heater stabilizes, the fault will correct itself and operation will continue normally. This alarm can be disabled by the user in the menu. With the alarm disabled, the VE-300 will continue to operate normally and power to the heater will again be shut off any time it exceeds the setpoint, but no alarm message will be shown and the buzzer will not sound. 3) The "Too Long to Setpoint Temperature alarm" will occur any time the setpoint has not been reached for more than 30 minutes. This can be temporarily silenced with the "enter" key and it will reset automatically, or it can be deactivated in the Alarms menu. This alarm will warn the user if the heater has failed or if the probe has become dislodged from the cage. Any time this alarm is activated power to the heater will be shut off.
"How does the High/Low history work?" The VE-300 will also store the High and Low temperatures during operation. You can toggle the default display to view these recorded temperatures by depressing the "History" button. You can reset the Low or High history value by depressing the "Clear" button while the value is displayed. These values will be saved by the battery backup in case of power failure. "What is the "Night Drop" feature?" This makes it super easy to cycle your animals during breeding season without controlling the temperature of the whole room or manually changing the settings twice a day. Setting the Night Drop amount: Use the +/- keys to select the number of degrees you want your temperature to drop at the start of the night temperature period. Example: If your Daytime Temperature setting is 80°F and you wish to drop to 70°F at night you would enter a value of "10°F". If you DO NOT wish to have a night temperature drop then use a value of "0°F". Don't forget, if your cage is in a warm room it can only drop to the ambient temperature of the room!
Description: The Vivarium Electronics VE-300 Thermostat is our recommendation for superior and reliable control of heating your snake's habitat. The VE-300 can handle up to 700 watts and is able to operate as a proportional style thermostat OR as an on/off style thermostat; plus special "extra" features. This proportional thermostat is a "table top" model designed to sit nicely on top of your racks or cages and the 3 button keyboard makes it ultra-easy to navigate through the menu on a large back-lit display which makes programming easy and intuitive. We also offer the VE-100 model as a more economical alternative; which can also handle up to 700 watts and operates as an on/off style thermostat that is also safe, effective and reliable. Both of these thermostats work great with our Reptile Basics Radiant Heat Panel, 80 watts for snake habitats.
