Thousands of Years of Geologic Process in about a Month
It's been ages since I last used a rock tumbler in grade school but I used to love the highly polished rocks and stones my science teacher would allow us to keep after putting them through our classes tumbler. These days I'm looking for neat projects to do with my young kids and hunting for interesting rocks to put in the tumbler is a great way to get outside and also impart a little earth sciences and geography lessons on my boys.
►Initial Impression & Setup:
It's been so long since I've used a rock tumbler that I don't really have a control to compare this National Geographic Tumbler against. Overall I think this is a nice, relatively inexpensive tumbler. I was a bit surprised at the amount of plastics used in the tumbler. Even the drum is plastic, albeit with an inner material that might be metallic.
Setup is really just unpacking the box and following the simple instructions to get started right away. The drum simply sits in small groves on the base, while a rubber wheel (that's connected to the motor) rotates the tumbler.
This kit includes everything you need (minus water) to get started including a bag full of different rocks which are covered in the accompanying guide. You'll also get four different packets with different courses of grit inside to speed the rock polishing process along.
I really like this tumbler and overall my thoughts are positive. My only complaint is that the tumbler definitely is not water tight as claimed on the product page. Even after first setting up the tumbler I'd sprung a slow leak around the drums seal within a matter of moments. There's nothing I'm apparently doing wrong, I've consulted the manual and carefully inspected the drum. It just leaks a small amount of water.
Second, if you're considering purchasing this product then just know that the tumbler needs to run constantly for at least 3-4 weeks to get the highly polished rocks you're after. This includes regularly changing the water and steadily adjusting the grit used to polish the rocks. Also, this tumbler is loud and vibrates quite a bit. I have it setup in a workshop/hobby area and I can hear this tumbler from across my house.

TUMBLER is a piece of JUNK !
Wanted to return this product but beyond return time. Started using it with my granddaughter a week [September 30, 2017 ago as I had not seen her since August and has much helpful information in package. Requires about 30 days to complete tumbler cycle. Worked fine for phase one , then per instructions, cleaned rocks, changed water and it started to tumble then stoped, tightened lid-same result, Never got further as it stopped working . May contact manufacturer if I still have information as the machine I was sent is a piece of junk that did not even surrvive the tumbling cycle.

Product worked beautifully the first time but then broke after the second time. My son was very disappointed and there was no way for me to contact the seller to order a replacement.

My granddaughter loves it! She is only 4 but with help from daddy she is having a blast seeing how pretty her rocks are turning out after tumbling them.

Pretty much garbage...thing leaked grit from day one and rocks do NOT polish as advertised even after 2 weeks of tumbling.

Grand daughter loved getting this for Christmas. She's been collecting stones and rocks for over a year. Now she gets to polish and use them to create jewelry 😀
